Raphael is a corporate and M&A lawyer, with almost 40 years of practicing experience. Encompassing both international and local work, he has extensive experience in various areas notably Corporate and Commercial, Mergers and Acquisitions, and Information Technology Law. He advises on domestic and international projects, acquisitions, joint ventures, corporate restructuring, commercial and corporate matters. He has advised clients on numerous domestic and cross-border transactions. Some of Raphael’s notable work includes advising a listed client company listed on the acquisition of companies that will own and operate two hydro power plants in Sabah; a solar power plant in Kedah; and a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur specialising in paediatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology, advising one of Malaysia’s largest telecommunications conglomerates on two separate corporate acquisition exercises, one of which was a cross-border acquisition, in relation to the acquisition of two separate multinational IT solutions service providers, and advising a Malaysian oil and gas company on their tender documents, ICT contracts and audit processes with the company’s third-party vendors. Raphael has been recognised as one of the Top 15 M&A Lawyers in Asia (ALB Asia 2022), a Notable Practitioner for M&A in the Technology and Telecommunications industry (IFLR 2022), and a Key Lawyer for Corporate and M&A in Malaysia (The Legal 500 Asia Pacific 2021), among others. He was also counsel for a share sale transaction of a Malaysian company to a London-based private equity fund which was identified by The Edge Malaysia as the Best M&A Deal of 2017. Raphael has also been described by clients as “a very experienced lawyer” with “good business acumen which is very helpful in advising our businesses” (Asialaw Profiles), and as standing out as an “excellent and experienced practitioner” (Legal 500). Apart from his practice as a corporate and M&A lawyer, Raphael has been the Chairman of the LAWASIA Moot Standing Committee since 2008 Raphael is also the Programme Director of the “LLM (Applied Law) in ASEAN+6 Legal Practice” programme and the subject-matter expert and Teaching Fellow of the Cross-border Contracts and Cross-border M&A courses within this programme at the College of Law (Australia). He also authored the syllabus for, and annually coordinates and lectures as Adjunct Lecturer, the “ASEAN Business and Investment Law” course at Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) for its LLM International Business Law programme. Raphael was formerly Council Member of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) for the year 2024 and the Chair of the IPBA’s Legal Development and Training Committee for the years 2020 – 2024.
